This was commissioned by an events company to promote the forthcoming Tutankhamen exhibition coming to London.
The sculpture was carved in expanded polystyrene, moulds were made and then each piece was cast in fiberglass. Massive steel trusses were built into the legs and steelwork went up to the shoulders. The statue was made in four basic sections – legs & skirt, torso, head, right arm. Each section was then bolted together with the aid of a large crane. The base was made of concrete and weighed 4 tons. The statue bolts down on to the base.
We delivered the statue on a lorry with the statue lying in one piece on its back and used an on board crane to lift it off and into position. We mounted the statue onto a barge and sailed it under Tower Bridge which was opened specially for the occasion. The next day we moved it to Trafalgar square where it attracted crowds every day.
The event made headline news across the world; it was shown on the news in 75 television stations in the usa alone. This giant piece of work involved a team of talented people over an eight week period and is a testimony to their skills.
